Mercedes-Benz is preparing a ground-up redesign of its compact C-Class model line, beginning with an all-new sedan that's due to arrive in Europe in spring 2007. The car is expected to go on sale at U.S. dealers later in the year as a 2008 model.

Eventually, the new C-Class range will encompass a variety of body styles, as does the current series. The next generation will include a sedan, a station wagon, a sporty coupe and a convertible. Styling cues will be adapted from the redesigned S-Class sedan that debuts this fall at the Frankfurt auto show.

The new C-Class will be offered in both rear- and all-wheel-drive variants, and will come with a variety of four- and six-cylinder gas and diesel engines. A high-performance AMG variant with a V-8 engine is also planned.
