Jaguar offered Americans a "teaser" for its next-generation XK when it unveiled the awkwardly named Advanced Lightweight Coupe concept earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show.

While the concept provided a pretty good idea of what the future vehicle would look like, Jaguar engineers now are driving actual prototypes of the new production model, which reportedly will be unveiled this fall at the Frankfurt auto show.

The next XK coupe and convertible will feature an aluminum body, and will share some common suspension and driveline components with today's XJ sedan. Engines will include normally aspirated and supercharged V-8s, mated to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission.

Jaguar officials say the new XK is due to arrive at U.S. dealers in late spring or early summer 2006 as a 2007 model.
