AUBURN HILLS -- Keshia Hines put on a dominating performance to help Auburn Hills Avondale rout Utica 63-23 Tuesday night in the season opener.
Hines, a 6-foot-2 junior post player, had 18 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in 2 1/2 quarters. She set the tone in the first quarter with six points, six rebounds and three blocks, including one on Utica guard Mandy Piechowski who will play next year at Michigan State.
"Keshia was the spark at both ends tonight," Avondale coach Todd Henderson said. "We missed some bunnies (layups) early and she stepped up and elevated everybody's play. She can get a block at one end and finish at the other."
The Yellow Jackets missed eight of their first nine shots before Hines' three-point play started a 17-0 run to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 19-5 lead.
"She's a tremendous basketball player," said Utica coach Tom McDonald of Hines. "She's the whole deal. She has her body under control more than last year. We're undersized in the post and she was getting it (ball) in spots where we couldn't stop her."
Said Hines: "Coach (Henderson) told me to post up and ask for the ball. I wanted to get out and run tonight. We played good defense during the run."
Avondale held Utica scoreless for an 11:30 stretch of the first half. The Chieftains missed 12 straight shots from the field and six from the free-throw line.
"We played hard and finished during that 17-0 run," Henderson said. "We stepped it up defensively. We didn't give them anything."
Avondale led 30-12 at halftime. Hines scored five straight points, including a layup off a steal, to spark an 11-0 run to start the second half. Sharda'e Johnson finished the run with two three-pointers. Johnson had 15 points.
Piechowski was limited to five points. She made her only field goal, a three-pointer, to give Utica a 5-2 lead in the opening minute. She was 1-of-13 from the field.
