 Football extras

CENTER LINE -- With all due respect to Three Dog Night, the number one isn't so lonely after all; at least not in Center Line.

One more step is all Jay Grobbel needed to block a punt. One more chance is all Center Line (2-1, 1-1) needed to turn defeat into victory. And it was Rich Gottardo's first extra point that enabled host Center Line to earn the victory.

Grobbel, a senior linebacker whose specialty is blocking kicks, blocked a Warren Lincoln (1-2, 1-1) punt and Brandon Landoski recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown with 2:16 remaining to tie the game at 18.

The point after was anything but automatic for these two Macomb Area Conference Gold Division rivals. The six previous tries were unsuccessful and Gottardo, Center Line's second string place kicker, was called upon to kick the extra point to give the Panthers a 19-18 lead.

Gottardo's interception on Center Line's 3-yard line with 1:05 left sealed the victory on Saturday.

This was the 59th game contested for the Brown Jug and Center Line has the series lead by, you guessed it, one game; 30-29.
