WEST BLOOMFIELD -- Bam! Just that quick Anthony Bowman ran 75 yards for a touchdown on the game's second play and Orchard Lake St. Mary's never looked back.
St. Mary's scored three touchdowns in the first 7:32 to take a 20-0 lead and the Eaglets went on to defeat Warren DeLaSalle, 30-0, Saturday in a Catholic League Central Division game.
"We probably caught them off guard," Bowman said. "It's track. A lot of us run track."
St. Mary's (5-0, 2-0) capitalized on three first-quarter turnovers to build its lead. After quarterback Justin Siller's 7-yard touchdown pass to Nick Koenigsknecht gave the Eaglets a 14-0 lead, linebacker Jonathan Misch returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown for a 20-0 lead.
DeLaSalle (3-2, 0-2) never recovered. Blair Hollis recovered a Pilot fumble on the next play from scrimmage and Koenigsknecht stopped a DeLaSalle drive on the Eaglets' 45-yard line with two minutes left in the first quarter with an interception.
"We got some turnovers quick," St. Mary's coach George Porritt said. "What can you say about Misch? He got that interception and he put pressure on their quarterback all day. Defense was the key today. We had that goal-line stand late thanks to players like (linebacker) Dominic Knight. The offense struggled a little. We had some penalties and we didn't always execute."
St. Mary's forced five turnovers and sacked Cecil St. Pierre (6-17, 86 yards, two interceptions) five times. The Pilots had 151 yards in total offense and their only serious threat ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down at the 5-yard line.
St. Mary's turned the ball over once.
Bowman led St. Mary's with 189 yards on 14 carries. His 46-yard run set up the Eaglets' second touchdown.
An interception by Hollis on the DeLaSalle 28 set up a 36-yard field goal by Steve Andrews that gave St. Mary's a 23-0 lead with 5:15 left in the third.
DeLaSalle put together its only real good drive on the next series thanks mostly to St. Pierre. His 29-yard pass to Don Fowler gave the Pilots a first down at the St. Mary's 34. On fourth and 16 from the 30, St. Pierre completed a 26-yard pass to Brian Lewis who ran a slant. But on first-and-goal from the 4 the Pilots failed to gain a yard and St. Pierre's fourth down pass in the end zone was incomplete.
The Eaglets put the game out of reach with a 16-play, 94-yard drive that ended with Chris Mitchell's 25-yard touchdown run. It was his only carry of the game.
St. Mary's plays at Detroit Catholic Central next Saturday in another Central Division matchup.
"Every week we're getting better and better," said Bowman, a senior running back who committed to Iowa. "We've got to get back to the drawing board and get ready for next week."
