WYANDOTTE -- For 25 years, Patricia Izzo has specialized in fine art photography and painting. But when her studio caught fire four years ago, it nearly wiped out the city's art scene and ended with her losing everything.

She learned how a tragedy could bring on more creativity.

"It's not until you lose everything, you are able to appreciate what you have," Izzo said. "I was able to take on a depth of work I've never done. Moving on from that point, (the fire) has given me motivation as an artist."

Since the fire, Izzo's works have been featured in publications and exhibits around the country. Last year, she was a contest winner for the American Photo Magazine, which received more than 60,000 entries.

"I've been extremely blessed to do what I love," Izzo said. "My work can be felt."

Patt Slack, owner of River's Edge Gallery and artist agent, said Izzo's work is an inspiration.

"Patricia's work is exceptional. She really does some awesome things with lighting. Her work speaks for itself," Slack said.

"Her creativity is clear. She gives the viewer a thought and a memory."

Izzo's work will be on display during an exhibit at River's Edge on Nov. 18. The exhibit, "Seduction and Desire," will be on display from 6-10 p.m.

Izzo works full time on her paintings and photography and is known for her creative technique of using outdoor lighting.

"I am an outdoor photographer, and photographers know their light," she said.

"I wait from the perfect time of day, and I am able to get the studio effect I need to capture for whatever idea I have for it."

Her studio is at 2920 Biddle, above the historical RP McMurphy's restaurant, and is shared with longtime business partner Sharon Sims, an artist who also lost artwork in the fire.

"I hope that everyone who attends the event leaves with a thought and gives them something to talk about. I am an artist that takes risk," Izzo said.
