INNSBRUCK, Austria -- Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars will captain the U.S. team at the hockey world championships.

"Mike is a player our team looks up to," U.S. coach Peter Laviolette of the Carolina Hurricanes said. "He leads both on and off the ice, and that's extremely important."

Modano, a 16-year NHL veteran, has played in the world championships (1990, 1993), the Olympics (1998, 2002) and last year's World Cup of Hockey.

Laviolette also named three alternate captains -- Doug Weight of the St. Louis Blues, Richard Park of the Minnesota Wild and Aaron Miller of the Los Angeles Kings.

The United States, bronze-medal winners at last year's worlds, faces Slovenia on Sunday. The 16-team tournament starts Saturday and ends May 15 in Vienna.
