Sidney Crosby might already be a household name, at least among NHL fans, but here are five other rookies to watch this season:

1. Alexander Ovechkin, Washington: The No. 1 overall pick in 2004 is ready to handle the NHL's grind after spending the last four seasons playing against men twice his age in Russia's SuperLeague.

2. Zach Parise, New Jersey: This former North Dakota All-American and Team USA star stole some of Crosby's thunder with a goal and two assists in season-opening victory over the Penguins.

3. Thomas Vanek, Buffalo: Starred at the University of Minnesota, then went on a scoring tear in the American Hockey League last season. The rebuilding Sabres will give him every opportunity to do the same in the NHL.

4. Dion Phaneuf, Calgary: Drafted ninth overall in '03, he was ready to make the leap straight to the NHL last season. He has got size, skills and a mean streak, enough to become a No. 1 defenseman.

5. Jeff Carter, Philadelphia: Along with fellow rookie Mike Richards, Carter, 20, led the Flyers' minor league affiliate to the Calder Cup last season.
