Michigan Sports Hall of Fame: Class of 2007

The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame welcomed its class of 2007 at the 53rd Annual MSHOF Induction Ceremony, presented by Big Boy Restaurants, on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, which was held for the first time at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

The event also featured the announcement of the MSHOF Wright & Filippis Courage Award presented annually to a sporting figure who has demonstrated dedication and perseverance in the athletic arena. This year's recipient was Cheryl Angelelli. Other event highlights included a Hollywood-style red-carpet entrance complete with special commemorative photographs, and the addition of the support of new sponsors and media partners: The Detroit News; News/Talk 760 WJR AM Radio. Detroit News columnist Bob Wojnowski interviewed inductees as they entered on the red carpet while WJR's Steve Courtney talked to them live at their special on-site studio at the VIP reception.

    Big 'Yes!' to no-no

Milwaukee Brewers batters couldn't do much with Justin Verlander's pitches last June 12. But Verlander's no-hitter was a home run with Detroit News readers, who voted it the No. 1 sports moment of 2007 in balloting conducted at detnews.com.
Verlander's historic game -- the first no-hitter at Comerica Park and the first by a Tigers pitcher since 1984 -- outpolled Michigan State's NCAA hockey championship, 35.29 percent to 22.79 percent. Results were announced during Monday's Michigan Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.
Rounding out the top five moments: 3. Lloyd Carr retires as Michigan football coach; 4. Tigers trade for All-Stars Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, and 5. Magglio Ordonez wins the batting title.
