Man likely to be charged in fatal boating crash

A Warren man is expected to turn himself in to Macomb County Sheriff's officials today to face charges in connection with a June 21 Lake St. Clair boating crash that left one pe- rson dead and another seriously injured. The sheriff's of- fice said Tuesday the 27-year-old man is expected to be ar- raigned today in New Baltimore District Court on felony charges of operating while un- der the influence in connection with the crash. Police said the man's boat hit the boat of his friend, Thomas Moravcik, 28, around 1:20 a.m. Moravcik of Chesterfield Township was killed and Moravcik's girlfriend was seriously injured.

Nonprofit honors local man for heroism

A Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that honors those who save the lives of others bestowed a medal for heroism to a local man who pulled another from a burning van in Sep- tember 2007. The Carnegie Hero Fund honored 20 people, including Robert Bercel, 46, of Richmond. Bercel helped save William J. Shepherd, 78, who was trapped in a burning van after a collision with a tractor-trailer.
