Lions sign cornerback Demarcus Faggins, release Chuck Darby

Tim Twentyman / The Detroit News

The Lions signed free agent defensive back Demarcus Faggins on Tuesday.

An eight-year veteran cornerback, Faggins was drafted by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the 2002 NFL draft. He played seven seasons in Houston, appearing in 82 games with 36 starts, amassing 216 tackles and five interceptions. He signed with the Tennessee Titans in the offseason but didn't play in a game before his release.

The Lions released defensive tackle Chuck Darby to make room on the roster for Faggins.

Darby was signed two weeks ago to replace rookie Sammie Hill, who is battling an ankle injury. Hill was inactive for Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the decision to release Darby could mean Hill is ready to return.
