Trucker sentenced in Pa. crash that killed 2 Mich. men

Associated Press

Waynesburg, Pa. -- An Alabama truck driver has been sentenced to six to 22 months in jail in a western Pennsylvania crash that killed two Michigan men last year.

Forty-two-year-old David Elrod, of Crossville, Ala., was convicted of homicide by vehicle in a nonjury trial in August. Greene County Judge Farley Toothman imposed the sentence Tuesday but allowed Elrod to remain free on bail until post-trial motions are filed.

Authorities say Elrod was driving on Interstate 79 near Kirby in April 2008 when his rig slammed into a pickup truck, killing 46-year-old David Wimert and 47-year-old Terry Caryl Sr. of Port Huron, Mich.

Elrod took the stand and apologized for the crash. Wimert's sister, Kristine Miller, told him the loss had put a "hole" the hearts of family members.
