Metro Detroit voters face varying issues

The Detroit News

Voters today decide on everything from mayoral and council elections to taxes and governance.

• In Macomb County, voters countywide will decide on a new charter that could overhaul government operations and pave the way for an elected executive. New Haven voters will decide on a bond to replace their water supply system, and there are mayoral matchups in Sterling Heights and Mount Clemens.

• Oakland County voters will elect mayors in Southfield and Pontiac, as well as decide on a bond request for a new community center in Berkley. In Royal Oak, residents will weigh a moratorium on new liquor license transfers, and Royal Oak Township voters face a millage hike. Madison Heights, Oxford, Huron Valley and Brandon school districts are among those with millage or bond proposals.

• In Wayne County, Brownstown Township voters decide a millage increase to stave off layoffs in the fire department, while school districts in Garden City, Grosse Pointe, River Rouge and Livonia have millage or bond proposals on the ballot. Mayoral contests include those in Romulus and Southgate.

• In Livingston County, voters in Hamburg Township weigh a tax increase for police services, and a first-time increase for parks. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Forecasts call for highs of 45 degrees and 15 mph winds.
