Aretha Franklin to sing at Motown gala

Susan Whitall / The Detroit News

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin will perform the Motown Historical Museum's Nov. 21 gala at the Detroit Marriott hotel, museum officials announced Thursday.

Franklin was never a Motown artist -- she signed to Columbia Records when Motown was just a fledgling label (she later moved to Atlantic) -- but she has long been a friend to Motown artists and executives.

Already announced for the gala, the annual fundraiser for the museum, are Otis Williams and the Temptations and Stevie Wonder. The comedian Sinbad will emcee, and attendees will include Berry Gordy Jr. and his sister Esther Gordy Edwards, the founder of the Motown museum.
