Oakland County Dems to rally over health care

Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News

Royal Oak -- Members of the Oakland County Democratic Party are to stage a health care rally Saturday as debate over President Obama's overhaul of the nation's health care system was debated in Congress.

The event is to include a march on Woodward Avenue between 11 Mile and Catalpa and expected to culminate with a 1:30 p.m. rally in the parking lot of St. John's Episcopal Church, 11 Mile and Woodward. Michigan AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney is scheduled to speak.

Hundreds are expected to attend, including local activists, state leaders and area union officials.

Obama's landmark health care overhaul was moving toward a vote in the House after anti-abortion lawmakers won a chance to knock out language that would let people who get federal subsidies buy insurance plans that include abortion coverage, according to the Associated Press.
