Autos Editor / Columnist
Manny Lopez is Auto Editor of The Detroit News, moving to the Business Desk after three years as an editorial writer. He's well versed on the politics and policy issues the auto industry faces from his time spent on the edit page, where he covered business issues with a significant focus on the Big Three.
In addition to his duties as Auto Editor, leading the best auto reporting team in the nation, he writes a weekly column for the business section. His column will focus on insider issues in the auto industry, and related topics including health care, Big Oil and local employment. He's particularly also interested in what's happening in Venezuela, where he has family and in exposing the goofy economic policies that are continually thrust upon us from elected officials in Lansing.
Manny has a journalism degree from the University of Kansas and is working on a master's in economics from the University of Detroit-Mercy.
He can be reached at mlopez@detnews.com.

Private sector behind success in Kalamazoo schools
Long after the teleprompters reminded President Barack Obama to thank the bureaucrats assembled at Kalamazoo Central High School, pitch the requisite one-liners to a rapt audience and remind students they had an obligation to serve the public, he briefly talked about the group who really made a difference in students' lives -- the private donors who are funding college education for this fortunate group of students. - 06/09/2010
