Special letter: MSU center connects with region

Michigan State University has increased its connections with southeastern Michigan by opening the MSU Detroit Center. This MSU investment in community partnerships is designed to help create the human and social capital necessary to ensure transformation of the region.

Metro Detroit students interested in enrolling at MSU can meet with local representatives from the office of admissions. Businesses interested in partnering with MSU programs can contact representatives of MSU's government affairs office. Alumni can meet with representatives from MSU's office of advancement. Students interested in pursuing graduate degrees can take some courses in their own hometown. And expanding the many community-campus partnerships will create access to MSU's faculty and research partnership office at YouthVille Detroit.

The MSU Detroit Center also will be home to a community music school operated by the university's college of music that seeks to provide area children and youth with an in-depth, sequential music experience while building vital life skills. CMS Detroit plans to complement, not compete with, programs from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre and Detroit Public Schools' School of the Arts.

MSU's College of Education will use the new space to support several of its programs that continue to partner with Detroit schools. This includes a seven-week teaching experience in the city's summer school program for MSU education students and regular activities for Detroit high school students interested in pursuing education careers.
