8 vacant Detroit homes burn overnight

Detroit -- Fire Department officials are investigating eight suspicious fires in abandoned homes overnight on the city's east side.
All of the structures set ablaze were vacant and in an area east of Alter Road and between Mack and Warren, Detroit Fire Department officials said.
Arson is suspected, said investigators, who added that the area normally is quiet and not considered a chronic hot spot for that type of crime.

A spokesman for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said the incidents will be thoroughly investigated.
"Our arson investigators will actively pursue those who set these blazes," Edward Cardenas said. "This further emphasizes the need for the city to come together to fight arson on Angels Night and every night."
The fires highlight the need for officials to address the thousands of abandoned houses in the city, said Mike Whitty, University of Detroit-Mercy professor and public policy expert.
"What really is needed is a recognition the city should give the highest priority ... to the demolishing of abandoned homes," Whitty said. "Priority particularly is needed for half-burned homes that are sitting there as a temptation (to arsonists)."
There were more than 90,000 vacant housing units in Detroit in 2007, more than double the number in 2000, according to the U.S. Census.
