Southeastern puts forfeit behind, downs Brother Rice

Lathrup Village -- After Detroit Southeastern was forced to forfeit its PSL semifinal victory over Detroit Cody on Oct. 16, it easily could have mailed in its season finale against Birmingham Brother Rice and readied for the playoffs.

But Southeastern (8-1) remained focused and knocked off its Catholic League counterpart, 19-13, on Friday night at Southfield-Lathrup.

"I'm really proud of my guys," Southeastern coach Donshell English said. "We made new goals. One of the goals they took from us -- it was my fault -- but we were able to see past that and regroup."

Southeastern was forced to forfeit its 28-7 victory over Cody because it used an ineligible player. Southeastern was looking to defend its PSL title.

Against Brother Rice, William Gholston once again stood out, amassing 11 tackles and blocking both a field goal and a punt.

"Whenever we need a big play, he's always around to make that big play," English said.

Edward Thomas both threw for and ran for a touchdown for Southeastern, and Paris Powell rushed 35 times for 130 yards and another score.

Brother Rice finished 5-4.
