Fire damages former home of Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor -- A fire that damaged the former home of a legendary pinball palace Saturday night and triggered the evacuation of a high-rise apartment building on the southeast end of the University of Michigan campus remains under investigation, officials said Sunday.
Firefighters responded just before 11 p.m. Saturday to a fire in a vacant old wood-framed building that once housed Pinball Pete's, a longtime hangout for college kids and local teens looking for an electronic gaming fix. The business moved across South University years ago.
The fire, which heavily damaged the building, was under control before 2 a.m., said battalion chief Amy Brow.

As firefighters doused the flames, however, they ordered the evacuation of University Towers next door. The fourth floor experienced some smoke damage, several windows melted and a small fire in one room was quickly extinguished, Brow said.
Hundreds of students and local residents filled South University and, along with the heavy smoke, made traffic difficult in the area.
No cause has been determined for the fire, Brow said.
