Detroit Public Schools' enrollment beats predictions

Jim Lynch / The Detroit News

Detroit -- The Detroit Public Schools are seeing the benefits of efforts targeted at bringing more students back to the district.

As of Monday morning, the district boasted 85,581 enrolled students. That's 2,000 more than expected when Detroit officials put together their budget for this year. The school district's 2009-10 budget projected 83,777 students this year.

Due to attendance requirements for students, 83,812 can be counted as full-time students and reported to the state as such.

In the past year school officials have encouraged parents to keep their children in the district and worked to bring former students back into the fold. The amount of school funding provided by the state hinges largely on the enrollment figures.

In Detroit, every dollar counts. The district is facing a $259 million budget deficit.
