EPA reaches settlement over Detroit company's hazardous waste

Jim Lynch / The Detroit News

Detroit -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reached a $700,000 settlement with Detroit-based Usher Enterprises Inc. over the company's handling of hazardous waste.

Federal officials have directed Usher to upgrade two of its facilities in the city -- one at 10585 Grand River Ave. and the other at 8900 Roselawn Ave. Those upgrades will include new storage tanks for oil and testing and decontamination of older tanks.

Inspections of the company's sites by federal regulators turned up alleged violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Those issues centered on Usher's handling of used oil. The Grand River location stored 1 million gallons of used oil while the Roselawn site featured 50 storage tanks.

As part of the settlement, the company will also pay a $19,700 fine.

Usher officials could not be reached for comment.
