HBO documentary offers rare look at Obama

Mekeisha Madden Toby / The Detroit News

HBO's candid and touching documentary "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama" is definitely worth the watch when it airs at 9 tonight. The film follows the president's history-making odyssey to the White House as the first African-American president by showing all the milestones we know and some really surprising footage we don't. Interwoven with the drama of the campaign are rare moments when Obama is shown criticizing himself in one segment and crying over the death of his grandmother in another. But Malia and Sasha are the real scene stealers here, and what they say and do will melt your heart.
