Wings call up Doug Janik for defensive help

Detroit -- The Red Wings took a temporary step toward bolstering their flu-wracked defense corps Tuesday, recalling Doug Janik from Grand Rapids.

Both Jonathan Ericsson and Brian Rafalski will miss the game against Boston Tuesday night. Niklas Kronwall, who was ill Monday, took part in the morning skate and said he felt fine.

"Janik's played well in the National League before, so we're not worried about him one bit," coach Mike Babcock said.

Janik has played 161 games since 2002-03, for Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Montreal. His last NHL game was with the Canadiens last April.

"I got the call about 9 p.m. last night and I drove in from Grand Rapids," Janik said. "Everybody wants to play in the NHL and playing for the Red Wings just makes it that much more special."
