Detroit Southeastern's Brandan Kearney picks Michigan State

Detroit Southeastern swingman Brandan Kearney announced Tuesday he will play college basketball at Michigan State. Kearney, 6-foot-5 and 180 pounds, is a class of 2011 recruit.

"MSU has everything I want in a university," Kearney said. "I always wanted to play for a coach that won a national championship. From coach (Tom) Izzo I can learn different things on and off the court. After this summer I feel there are still some things I need to work on, but my confidence is up. I'm more aggressive than I was a year ago."

Kearney averaged 13 points, six assists and six rebounds last season as he helped Southeastern reached the Detroit Public School League final and a Class A regional final.

Kearney is a four-star recruit and the No. 9 small forward in the country, according to Scout.com. He said the final four teams in his selection process were MSU, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio State.

Scout.com reported last month that Kearney had settled on MSU.

Kearney's commitment comes less than a week after the Spartans secured one of their top recruits for 2010 -- 6-foot-10 center Adreian Payne of Dayton, Ohio. Scout.com ranks Payne as a five-star recruit and the No. 5 center in the country.

Kearney is MSU's first 2011 commitment. Joining Payne in the 2010 class are Detroit Pershing guard Keith Appling, Fort Wayne, Ind., forward Russell Byrd, and Eaton Rapids, Mich., forward Alex Gauna.
