4 MSU students charged with detonating explosive device

East Lansing -- Four Michigan State University students are facing felony charges in connection with detonating an explosive device in the city.

Late Sunday, East Lansing Police responded to a call about an explosion in the 400 block of Grove Street, where authorities said a 3-inch mortar exploded in a yard. Authorities were alerted about a car being driven by those suspected of being involved.

Shortly after midnight, MSU police stopped the car at a dormitory parking lot near Wilson and Birch roads.

Explosive devices found inside were later destroyed by the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, officials said.

Four students were arrested on felony explosives charges: Olivia M. Hudson, Sasha N. Savage, both 18 and of Okemos; Darby D. Dudley, 18, of Mason; and Nikolai E. Wasielewski, 18, of Rossford, Ohio.

They were arraigned Monday before 54-B District Court Judge Richard Ball. The students were released after posting bond.

Each was charged with placing explosives and causing property damage as well as possession of bombs with unlawful intent -- causing property damage.

The charges carry penalties of 20 years in prison and $15,000 each.
