Rich Rodriguez disappointed with behavior of Purdue coach

Ann Arbor -- Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez wasn't happy about his postgame on-field meeting with Purdue coach Danny Hope.

According to Rodriguez, they shook hands after the Boilermakers' 38-36 victory on Saturday at Michigan Stadium, but Hope made a point to introduce Purdue starting left guard Zach Reckman. Reckman was suspended one game by the Big Ten for striking an opponent at the end of Purdue's loss to Northern Illinois in September.

Reckman's suspension came a week after Michigan's Jonas Moutan was suspended for punching a player in the Notre Dame game.

Following Mouton's suspension, Rodriguez said during a news conference: "We will watch every Big Ten game very closely, and any non-football act, whether it's a six-inch jab or anything not called for in the game of football, we're going to ask that that person gets the same type of punishment that Jonas Mouton got."

Rodriguez said Saturday he had not contacted the Big Ten about Reckman.

"I was a little bit disappointed that after the game their coach seemed to bring the lineman over like I was the reason that his lineman got suspended for that one game," Rodriguez said. "He brought him over there and said, 'Thanks for this,' or whatever. I don't know where that came from. I mean, I talked to him on the phone and told him it wasn't me. This was way back when. I didn't have anything to do with that young man getting suspended for that one game.

"What are you going to do? I usually go over and shake hands and tell you good luck on the next game. I mean, to come over and say something about that -- whatever."

Rodriguez described an awkward moment.

"(Hope) shook my hand and introduced me to Reckman and said, 'Thanks coach. Really appreciate what you did.' Whatever. I just (said), 'Hey, good luck to you guys. Good ballgame.'"

Hope released a statement through the Purdue sports information department.

"As far as I'm concerned, our conversation will remain between Coach Rodriguez and me," Hope said in the statement. "We'll leave it at that."

Injury update

• Tailback Brandon Minor, who has been hobbled this season by a high ankle sprain, tweaked the ankle late in the game, Rodriguez said. He did not indicate it was a serious concern.

• Receiver Martavious Odoms missed a second straight game with a sprained knee.

• Defensive lineman Greg Banks (foot) did not play.

Hemingway: 'I was clipped'

During the fourth quarter, it appeared Michigan's Junior Hemingway was not touched when he bobbled a punt return. Replays indicated U-M might have received the benefit of a friendly officiating call, but Hemingway said otherwise.

"I was kind of clipped," Hemingway said. "The ball was coming down and there was a guy in the way. I tried to move a little to get to the ball."

Hemingway was emphatic he was touched.

"Yeah, I got clipped," he said.

Stonum's record day

Somewhat overlooked in the defeat was sophomore Darryl Stonum's superb day returning kicks.

In the first quarter, Stonum had a 55-yard kickoff return that broke Michigan's single-season record for kick returns and return yardage. He also had a 54-yard return in the third quarter.

He has had 30 returns this season for 803 yards, passing Steve Breaston in both categories. Breaston had 689 yards on 28 returns in 2004.

Roundtree steps up

Receiver Roy Roundtree had 10 catches for 126 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Roundtree saw more playing time because of Odom's absence.

His 10 receptions were a team-high for Michigan this season. It was the Wolverines' second 100-yard receiving effort of the season.

"Roy had a good week of practice," Rodriguez said. "They were bringing some blitz early and we were able to hit some passes."
