Hundreds gather to celebrate U.S. veterans

Many unfurled American flags. Some visited soldiers' graves. Others recalled efforts from long-ago battlefields. Throughout Metro Detroit on Wednesday, they all united to salute those who have served in the U.S. armed forces.

From cemeteries to community centers, hundreds of people -- including servicemen and their families -- gathered for ceremonies commemorating Veterans Day.

Among the celebrations was an unveiling at the Madison Heights Chinese Community Center of a plaque honoring Chinese-American veterans.

The plaque, designed by Andrew Wong, 85, a World War II veteran, is engraved with the names of nearly 150 men and women from Michigan and Toledo.

It took years to compile the names, and Wong said he's still searching for more.

Many attending Wednesday's ceremony were members of AmVets Chinese American Post 85, who presented the plaque as a gift to the community center.
