Clinton Township -- If Republicans want to reassume power locally and nationally, they need to return to their core beliefs, the national party chairman said this morning.
Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said Republican candidates fared poorly in recent elections because they forgot what the party stood for.
He said the party could recapture the favor of the American public by promoting its beliefs in conservative causes, fighting for small businesses and promoting national security.

"The American people didn't reject us because of our conservative beliefs," he said. "We stopped leading. We stopped adhering to our principles."
Steele made the remarks during the inaugural Macomb County Republican Headliners Breakfast held at the Fern Hill Country Club.
Pointing to the popularity of "tea party" and other protests against Washington, Steele said Republicans are poised to win back some of the seats they've lost in recent elections.
