Howell Township
A fatal house fire in the 1600 block of Layton Road, near Burkhart, was being investigated Friday by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department. Firefighters were called to the house about 11 p.m. Thursday and found the home fully engulfed in flames.
A woman living in the home told neighbors her husband was still in the home. Attempts to reach him failed and firefighters found the man in the basement. An autopsy was being conducted. The woman was treated and released for smoke and fire-related injuries at St. Joseph Livingston Hospital. Their names have not been released.

MDOT closes I-96 lanes to finish bridge painting
The Michigan Department of Transportation will close lanes on eastbound I-96 from U.S. 23 to east of Pleasant Valley Road bridge for road construction and painting of the Pleasant Valley bridge. A single left lane closure will begin about 5 p.m. today with plans to close two lanes about 8:30 p.m. until 10 a.m. Sunday. If the contractor does not finish the bridge painting, another lane closure is planned from 10 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday.
