Meet the new Lions

Get to know the 10 players drafted by the Lions:

Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

Selected: 1st round, 1 overall

Ht./wt.: 6-3, 230

Comment: Is Stafford the franchise quarterback the Lions have long sought? He's smart, tough, talented -- and won't be rushed into service. But that huge contract certainly adds to the pressure.

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State

Selected: 1st round, 20th

Ht./wt.: 6-6, 263

Comment: Only one tight end went the first two rounds. And there's a reason why -- They don't make them like they used to (big, strong and able block and catch).

Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan

Selected: 2nd round, 33rd

Ht./wt.: 5-11, 202

Comment: While comparisons to Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu are a bit much, Delmas is a playmaker who can cover and tackle and keep heads on a swivel.

DeAndre Levy, LB, Wisconsin

Selected: 3rd round, 76th

Ht./wt.: 6-2, 235

Comment: The Lions certainly needed help at linebacker, but Levy played OLB in college, so it's a surprising choice. Still, he's athletic (4.50 40-yard dash) and a gamer.

Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State

Selected: 3rd round, 82nd

Ht./wt.: 5-11, 197

Comment: Williams will compete with Ronald Curry for time as a slot receiver. His biggest help figures to be on special teams, filling a huge void in the return game, especially punts.

Sammie Lee Hill, DT, Stillman

Selected: 4th round, 115th

Ht./wt.: 6-4, 329

Comment: The Lions wanted to get bigger up front. And if you plug Hill in next to mammoth veteran Grady Jackson, the front four finally can hold its ground, perhaps. But facing NFL talent will be a big jump.

Aaron Brown, RB, TCU

Selected: 6th round, 192nd

Ht./wt.: 6-0, 196

Comment: Another running back, but Brown's a bit of combo back with his speed and receiving ability. He's also shown good ability as a kick returner, but was limited by injuries and off-field issues.

Lydon Murtha, OT, Nebraska

Selected: 6th round, 228th

Ht./wt.: 6-7, 310

Comment: A specimen who impressed teams at the combine with the only sub 5.0-second clocking in the 40-yard dash. But he wasn't impressive in drive blocking and also was inconsistent in college.

Zach Follett, OLB, Cal

Selected: 7th round, 235th

Ht./wt.: 6-1, 236

Comment: An athletic outside linebacker who lacks size but has speed. He was third nationally and led the Pac-10 in tackles for loss with 23.0. He is a noted blitzer and was fourth in the league with 10.5 sacks. Follett also led the conference with five forced fumbles and was 12th in total tackles with an average 6.7.

Dan Gronkowski, TE, Maryland

Selected: 7th round, 253

Ht./wt: 6-6, 255

Comment: Although he started 17 games during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, Gronkowski was used primarily as a blocker early in his career. He has good size and is a solid blocker and is projected by scouting services as a backup.
