D.A.R.E.--Failing our kids Next Index Previous

Voices

Norma Bally,
Oak Park

“It’s very educational for children. But what you preach to them at home is how they’re going to grow up. You are their role models.”

Jane McAnall,
Royal Oak teacher

“Anything these children can get that can be used later in life is valuable.”

Jennette Williams
Detroit

“I’m glad they do it. They need to have activities for kids. I believe it’s worth it, but it’s really up to the parents to do their part.”

Stanley Johnson
10, Southfield

“It’s great because it teaches you a long life if you stay free of drugs.”

Jimmie Sankey
13, Inkster

“It’s good, because of some of the things they tell you about what drugs do to you. They tell you about the diseases you can get and the problems drugs can cause. I think it keeps kids from doing drugs.”

Mary Epps
11, Saint Clair Shores

“I learned about the different ways to say ‘No.’ My favorite is the broken record. You just keep on saying ‘no’ until they just walk away.

Ruth Stallworth
Fleming Elementary School Principal , Detroit

“Many of the families from which my children come have been involved in illegal activity. All they know about police is that they remember when they came and locked up their uncle. If they only associate negativity with law enforcement, then that doesn’t help. With DARE, they get weekly interaction with a police officer they get to know. That can only be good.”
