 About this report

Sunday, December 14, 2003: Gun manufacturers make little effort to fix or recall millions of defective firearms that kill or maim unsuspecting owners and people around them every year. The industry, which faces no outside regulation, enjoys a powerful ally in Congress.

Monday, December 15: Foreign gun makers have gotten around a federal import law by setting up companies in America that make guns that don't meet standards. And a host of local gun makers have entered the cheap gun market with poorly made guns that also couldn't be imported.

Tuesday, December 16: Gun makers have extensive options to make firearms safer, ranging from conventional to space-age technology.  Scientists offer choices ranging from radio-controlled guns to firearms that utilize Global Positioning Systems.

Should guns be brought under the control of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, so that safety and design standards can be enforced?
