Studies of the Great Lakes over the past decade repeatedly have listed development - the throngs of suburbs and strip malls sprouting near the shore - as one of the leading threats to the water. One recent study estimated that if trends continue, the amount of developed land in Michigan would triple between 1980 and 2040. This summer, The Detroit News and WZZM 13 traced the state's coastlines to gauge the extent of that transformation. |
